Celebrating Skill, Strategy, and Culture

The Ifaki Games Championships bring together players from across Nigeria to compete in three exciting categories: Ludo, Scrabble, and Opon Ayo (Ayo Olopon). Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or a passionate beginner, this is your chance to showcase your talent and join a vibrant gaming community.

Ludo Championship

Fast-paced and fun, Ludo tests your strategy and luck.

  • Game Setup

    • Players: 2–4 players.
    • Board: A square board with four colored home areas (Red, Blue, Green, Yellow).
    • Pieces: Each player has 4 tokens of their color.
    • Dice: One six-sided die.
  • Objective

Move all 4 tokens from your home area to your finish line (home column) before your opponents.

  • Starting the Game

    • Each player rolls the die; the highest roll starts.
    • To bring a token out of home, you must roll a 6.
    • Rolling a 6 gives you an extra turn.
  • Movement Rules

    • Tokens move clockwise along the track based on the die roll.
    • If you roll a 6, you can: Bring a new token out, OR Move an existing token forward 6 spaces.
    • After rolling a 6, you roll again.
  • Capturing Opponents

    • If your token lands on a square occupied by an opponent’s token, you capture it.
    • Captured token returns to its home area.
    • You earn an extra turn after capturing.
  • Safe Squares

    • Colored squares (usually marked) are safe zones.
    • Tokens on safe squares cannot be captured.
  • Entering Home Colum

    • Tokens must enter the home column by exact count.
    • If you roll a number higher than needed, you cannot move that token.
  • Winning

    • The first player to move all 4 tokens into the home column wins.
    • Remaining players continue to determine 2nd, 3rd, and 4th positions.

Scrabble Championship

For wordsmiths and thinkers, Scrabble challenges your vocabulary and tactical skills.

  • Objective

Score the highest number of points by forming words on the board using letter tiles.

  • Game Setup

    • Each player draws 7 tiles from the bag.
    • The board has a 15×15 grid with special bonus squares:
    • Double Letter Score (DL)
    • Triple Letter Score (TL)
    • Double Word Score (DW)
    • Triple Word Score (TW)
  • Gameplay

    • The first word must cover the center square (DW).
    • Words can be placed horizontally or vertically.
    • Each new word must connect to existing words on the board.
    • After playing, draw tiles to maintain 7 in your rack.
  • Scoring

    • Add up the points for each letter in the word.
    • Apply letter and word bonuses where applicable.
    • If you create multiple words in one turn, score all of them.
    • Using all 7 tiles in one turn earns a 50-point bonus (called a "bingo").
  • Valid Words

    • Words must appear in the official Scrabble dictionary.
    • No proper nouns, abbreviations, or foreign words (unless allowed by house rules).
  • Tile Exchange

    • You may exchange tiles instead of playing, but you lose your turn.
  • End of Game

    • The game ends when:
    • All tiles are used and no moves remain, OR
    • A player uses all their tiles and the bag is empty.
    • Deduct points for leftover tiles from each player’s score.
  • Winning

    • The first player to move all 4 tokens into the home column wins.
    • Remaining players continue to determine 2nd, 3rd, and 4th positions.

Opon Ayo Championship

A traditional Yoruba game that sharpens mathematical and strategic thinking.

  • Objective

Capture more seeds than your opponent. The player with the most seeds at the end wins.

  • Equipment

    • Board: 12 holes (6 on each side).
    • Seeds: 48 seeds (4 in each hole at the start).
    • Players: 2 players.
  • Setup

    • Each player controls 6 holes on their side.
    • Place 4 seeds in each hole (total 48 seeds).
  • How to Play

    • Players take turns moving seeds counterclockwise.
    • On your turn:
    • Pick up all seeds from one hole on your side.
    • Drop them one by one into subsequent holes, including your opponent’s side.
    • You cannot pick seeds from your opponent’s holes unless capturing.
  • Capturing Seeds

    • If your last seed lands in a hole that now contains 2 or 3 seeds, you capture all seeds in that hole.
    • If the next hole also has 2 seeds, you capture those too.
    • Captured seeds are removed from the board and kept by the player.
  • End of Game

    • The game ends when a player cannot make a move (no seeds on their side).
    • The winner is the player with the most captured seeds.
